drawing only £26 a year in sterling more than I drew in 1878,

On referring to the Blue Book of Hong-Kong for

1877, I find that the Surveyor General of Hong-Kong at that

time with 4 years of Colonial Service was drawing £1,200 per

annum plus £100 allowances, the salary of his predecessor having been £1,000 per annum. I therefore venture to think my application for an increase of salary to $8,400 is not unreasonable, in view of the very largely increased duties and responsibilities of the office, now being still further increased

by the extension of the boundaries of the Colony.

I have, &c.,

(84.) R. D. ORMSBY,

Director of Public Works.
